Beware Magnet Toys on Kids

Parents should be more careful in buying toys for children, especially when derived from a magnetic material. Recently, these surgeons in the UK reportedly dealing with two small children who accidentally swallow small magnets from toys.

The first case happened to children 18 months who had swallowed 10 small magnetic balls, and the second involving an eight-year boy who swallowed two magnetic strips 2 inches long. In both cases, the swallowed magnets from toys. Both children had mild abdominal pain and on further investigation found that the magnet had been lodged in their digestive system.

Small objects that are ingested by young children can usually pass through their digestive system without causing illness or internal damage. But when some of the magnetic element is ingested, they will make a different reaction. Some of the magnets can attract each other interested in the body, trapping the internal soft tissue and lead to the development of fistula. Fistula is a condition where an abnormal connection is formed between the soft tissues in the body, and if untreated, can cause serious illness.

According to the medical, children who swallowed magnets will not initially feel any pain, making it difficult for parents to know if their child had swallowed it.

"We are very concerned about the circulation of magnetic toys that can be easily obtained. The magnet is very easy to split. Parents should be warned of the risk of swallowing bits of magnet, especially in young children. We believe that the increase in public awareness of this risk will be key in preventing incidents similar, "said Dr. Anil Thomas George of Queen Medical Centre, part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, UK.

Some countries like the U.S. and Canada in recent years, have made a warning to the public and even draw back some of the products are made from magnetic toys.

"While we understand that it is impossible to prevent children from ingesting this stuff, but we will focus warn parents to be aware of potential dangers that could arise from the ingestion of magnets. We encourage parents to be more vigilant and careful when giving their children toys which may contain small magnets, "he said.

"We will also raise awareness among toy manufacturers, who have a responsibility to remind parents about the presence of magnets in their toys," he concluded
