Decrease in the ability of the brain, especially the cognitive abilities always occur in the elderly. But has now found a way to slow this decline is eating strawberries, blueberries and the like.
According to researchers from Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in the journal Annals of Neurology, older adults who eat lots of strawberries, blueberries and the like tend to experience cognitive decline more slowly than the elderly who rarely or never ate them.In these findings, researchers suggest that adding strawberries, blueberries and the like flavonoid-rich diet on the elderly can delay cognitive decline in the ability of up to 2.5 years.
Scientists claim that the inflammation and stress plays a major role in cognitive decline and taking a number of flavonoids can help reduce its impact.According to the census population in the United States in 2010, the population of elderly in the U.S. alone rose 15 percent during the first 10 years of the 21st century compared to the overall population only increased by 9.7 percent.
"Because of the condition, understanding the health issues of seniors are very important. Our study was intended to examine whether the intake of strawberries, blueberries and the like can slow the rate of decline in cognitive abilities," said lead researcher, Dr. Elizabeth Devore as reported from MedicalNewsToday.
Researchers collected data from the Nurses Health Study who had information from 121 700 women aged 30-55 years who worked as a nurse. All the participants also had to complete questionnaires related to health data and lifestyle. From there, researchers found that participants who consumed blueberries, strawberries and the like have a delay in cognitive decline rate is higher than other participants.
This also occurred in participants who consumed more total anthocyanidins and flavonoids.Elderly women who consume higher blueberries and strawberry has the possibility of cognitive decline on average 2.5 years older slower than the low intake of blueberries and strawberry.
But the researchers also predict there are other factors related decline in cognitive abilities in addition to the intake of elderly strawberries, blueberries and the like. For example, participants who ate more blueberries and strawberries are also exercising more.
