Noise levels at the Children's Play Place Mall Exceed Safe Limit
During this time many people underestimate the ear and hearing health because they are not overly intrusive physical abilities. In addition, symptoms of hearing loss is also not visible from the outside. In fact, the number of people in Indonesia pendegaran disorders is quite high, to the extent that entered ranked fourth highest in the world.
Untreated hearing loss and let it alone can interfere with productivity. People with hearing loss mean nothing works continue their education through college because of low reading and math skills. In children, most hearing impaired only educated up to grade 3-4 elementary school without the help of hearing aids.
"If not be helped, the more mature, the academic gap that occurs will be higher. Infant deafness of one ear is mostly slow development of speech. At school, these kids have trouble concentrating in class, grade, and often do not like to join social activities , "said Dr. Damayanti Soetjipto SpTHT (K), chairman of the National Committee on Prevention Hearing Loss and Deafness (Komnas PGPKT) in the Media Gathering at the House Hearing on the Health Ministry of Health Jakarta.
Results of the study the Ministry of Health in 1994 - 1997 found that the number of people with hearing loss in Indonesia there are as many as 35.6 million people or 16.8% of the total population. While the experience of deafness is as much as 850 000 people or about 0.4% of the population in Indonesia. This amount would not be ignored.
Actually, 50% of preventable causes of hearing loss. Therefore, Komnas PGPKT to intensify the campaign to the public about the importance of maintaining healthy and clean ears. Additionally, Komnas also campaigned for the early detection of babies are born deaf. In order for the hearing impaired is more swollen, the National PGPKT campaigns for noise conscious.
"Safe noise limit for the maximum loss is 80 decibels, above it must wear ear protectors. However, we found a lot of public places that have more noise than that," said Dr. Damayanti.
PGPKT Commission had conducted research on child entertainment at the malls in 16 major cities in Indonesia. The result, none of the children studied entertainment venues have noise levels below the safe limit of 80 decibels. The average level of noise generated is 94.4 to 128 decibels. Of course this condition is cause for concern because children often spend long hours in the place of entertainment.
Dr. Damayanti explains, the human ear is still safely when exposed to noise levels of 80 decibels for 24 hours. However, if the noise level rose to 85 decibels, hearing is still safe if exposed for 8 hours. 90 decibel noise level is still safe if exposed for 2 h and 100 decibels the noise level should not be exposed to more than 30 minutes.
Noise levels above the safe limit is not only found in a place bet. Communities also often play loud music while holding a celebration. It is also risky disrupt the hearing. In addition, traffic jams have a noise level of 95-96 decibels. That is, there are many sources of noise that causes hearing loss risk in the community.
This is certainly cause for concern. Furthermore, the Commission is trying to persuade PGPKT government to make regulations so that public places do not produce noise beyond the safe limit.
Minister of Manpower Decree 1999 has confirmed that the work environment are prohibited from producing noise above 80 decibels unless the employee has the ear protectors. The same policy may be applied to government regulations on public health.
