Gum Health Conditions Affect Your Knees

If you want a healthy knee to be moving swiftly, try to maintain healthy gums and mouth. The scientists found a link between them through the next study.

Research shows that bacteria in the gums associated with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis of the knee. The study was later published in the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology, which further adds to evidence that oral health greatly affect a person's overall health.

The researchers from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland analyzed the DNA of bacteria in the gums and found that the offspring of these bacteria can enter the bloodstream and settle in the synovial fluid in the knee.

Synovial fluid is the fluid that surrounds the patella and knee joints affects movement. If the bacteria enter the synovial fluid of this, it can cause inflammation in the knee joint.

"Synovial fluid is usually sterile in healthy people, so that bacteria that enter the fluid can cause pain," said Nabil Bissada, head of research, as reported by mnn on Monday (02/07/2012).

Researchers conducted a study of 36 patients mild arthritis. Of these patients, 5 of them had bacterial gums in knee synovial fluid.

Bissada recommends that people with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis and periodontitis need to get checks diligent in keeping the health of the gums and mouth.
